Frequently Asked Questions

At Springhouse Psychiatry, we believe mental health care should feel approachable, supportive, and grounded in evidence-based practice. This FAQ page is designed to help you understand what to expect and how we partner with you or your child on the path toward well-being.

Understanding Our Care

What does my Psychiatrist do?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. At Springhouse Psychiatry, we evaluate, diagnose, and treat emotional, behavioral, and developmental conditions in adults, children, and adolescents. We use a thoughtful combination of therapy, medication management, and lifestyle guidance to support long term wellness.

Who do you treat?

We provide care for:

  • Adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma related symptoms, mood disorders, and more
  • Children and teens experiencing emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges
  • Families looking for guidance, clarity, and compassionate support
Your First Appointment

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment is a calm, structured conversation where we take time to understand your concerns, history, and goals. Whether the visit is for you or your child, we focus on creating a clear, personalized plan that feels supportive and manageable.

How long are appointments?

  • Initial evaluations are longer to allow for a thorough assessment
  • Follow up visits are shorter and focus on progress, challenges, and treatment adjustments
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

How do you approach care for children and teens?

We take a developmentally informed, family centered approach. We consider emotional health, school functioning, social relationships, and family dynamics. Parents or caregivers are involved throughout the process, especially for younger children.

What happens during a child or teen's first visit?

The initial appointment usually includes time with both the child and the parent or guardian. We explore symptoms, developmental history, school experiences, and family context to create a plan that supports the child at home, at school, and socially.

Can you diagnose ADHD, autism, or other developmental concerns?

We evaluate for ADHD, mood and anxiety disorders, and behavioral conditions. For autism or learning differences, additional testing may be recommended, and we help coordinate referrals when needed.

Treatment & Medication

Will medication be recommended?

Medication is considered carefully and only when it may meaningfully improve symptoms or functioning. If medication is an option, we discuss it openly, including benefits, risks, and alternatives, so you can make an informed, comfortable decision.

How do you monitor medication?

We schedule regular follow ups to ensure treatment is effective, safe, and well tolerated. Adjustments are made collaboratively based on your experience and goals.

How do I request prescription refills?

Refills are typically handled during follow up appointments. Refill requests can be made through the patient portal or by calling the office. Please allow 48 to 72 hours for processing.

Telepsychiatry at Springhouse Psychiatry

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes. Telepsychiatry allows you to receive care from the comfort of your home through a secure, HIPAA compliant video platform. Many patients appreciate the convenience and flexibility.

What do I need for a virtual session?

A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection. We provide a secure link and simple instructions before your appointment.

Can I attend telepsychiatry sessions from anywhere?

You must be physically located in a state where our clinicians are licensed at the time of your appointment. We will confirm this during scheduling.

Safety & Emergencies

What should I do if I am in crisis?

If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline right away. Our office cannot provide emergency care.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Is my information confidential?

Absolutely. Your privacy is deeply respected. All sessions, whether in person or virtual, are protected by strict confidentiality standards. Information is only shared with your written permission or when required by law for safety.

Insurance, Fees & Logistics

Do you accept insurance?

We accept many major insurance plans. Our staff can help verify your benefits before your first appointment. View accepted insurance plans.

What if you don't take my insurance?

We can provide a superbill for out of network reimbursement if your plan allows it.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Most patients use credit/debit cards, HSA/FSA cards, or checks.

How do I contact the office?

You can reach our office by phone during business hours for scheduling, questions, or urgent (but non emergency) concerns. For routine matters such as refill requests, appointment changes, or follow up questions, the patient portal is the best way to contact us.

Portal messages are reviewed during office hours, and we do our best to respond within 1 to 2 business days. Please note that we cannot provide emergency support outside scheduled appointments; if you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline right away.

What is the Release of Information and how is it shared?

The practice keeps all patient information confidential and only releases records with written authorization. A Release of Information (ROI) form is required to share any part of your mental health record.

  • You choose who may receive information, what may be shared, and the purpose of the disclosure
  • Each ROI includes an expiration date and is valid only for the period stated
  • You may revoke or change your authorization at any time in writing; changes apply to future disclosures only
  • Certain disclosures may occur without an ROI when required by law (safety concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, court orders, medical emergencies)
  • For minors, a parent or legal guardian typically provides authorization unless state law grants the minor specific rights
  • All disclosures are documented and shared only through secure, privacy compliant methods

Appointment Rescheduling and Cancellation Policy

  • Please provide advance notice for any appointment changes to ensure availability for all patients
  • Reschedule or cancel by contacting the office during regular business hours
  • Appointment changes submitted through standard email are not accepted unless a secure messaging system is in use
  • Appointments canceled after the required notice period, as well as missed appointments ("no shows"), may result in applicable fees as outlined in the Cancellation/No Show Policy
  • Late arrivals should notify the office as soon as possible; sessions will conclude at the originally scheduled end time

Credit Card & Address Changes

  • Patients must keep credit card and address information current to ensure accurate billing and communication
  • Changes to a card (new card, expiration, loss, or compromised) should be reported promptly
  • Updates may be made by phone, through the patient portal, or during an appointment
  • All financial and contact information is stored and handled using secure, privacy compliant systems
